MIMOR PIWU
- 1 Min Read
Mimor Piwu (c. 1873-1933) was the first paramount chief of Zowolo, Lofa County, Liberia, during the last decade of the 19th century and early years of the 20th century.
He fought against the French occupation of northeastern Liberia during this period. During the peace talks which were held after the war, Chief Piwu was faced with the important decision of selecting which rule he would prefer for himself and his people. He decided in favour of Liberian rule.
A delegation consisting of James Demars, William Lomax, and Charmalie Johnson was sent up to him by the Liberian government requesting him to cast his lot with the Liberian government.
Chief Piwu was a powerful Lorma chief and a brave warrior. He opened roads leading from his chiefdom, connecting it with the coastal trade. Under his administration, the tribes of his chiefdom were first made to pay taxes to the Liberian government.
He further put an end to slave trading among his people and participated in numerous wars. His descendants still rule Zowolo and surrounding chiefdoms in Lofa County, Liberia.
