She was born Christina Ama Aidoo in Abeadzi Kyiakor, near Saltpond in the Central Region of Ghana. Her father was Nana Yaw Fama, the chief of Abeadzi Kyiakor, and her mother was Maame Abasema; both were influential figures who encouraged her education despite the prevailing norms of the time.

Raised in a royal Fante household, she was deeply influenced by the oral traditions and storytelling of her heritage. She was educated at Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast, where she first decided to become a writer, and later proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1964.

Her professional life was marked by a prolific output of seminal works, beginning with her play “The Dilemma of a Ghost” (1965), which explored the tensions between African and African-American identities. She taught at the University of Cape Coast and held various fellowships in the United States and Germany.

In 1992, she won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for her novel Changes: A Love Story, which tackled the complexities of polygamy and women’s autonomy in contemporary Africa. Beyond her writing, she founded the Mbaasem Foundation in 2000 to support African women writers.

Ama Ata Aidoo died on May 31, 2023, at the age of 81, following a short illness. Her death was met with nationwide mourning, including a state funeral held in her honor at the State House.

Her legacy endures through the generations of African writers she mentored and the “Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing” at the African University College of Communications, ensuring that her lifelong mission to give African women a “voice to speak” continues.
