MALI: The tomb of Askia is located in Gao, a city in eastern Mali. It is believed to be the burial place of Askia Mohammad I, the first Emperor of the Songhai Empire, which once controlled the lucrative trans-Saharan trade from West Africa. The complex includes the pyramidal tomb, two mosques, a cemetery and an assembly ground.

The Tomb of Askia was built at the end of the fifteenth century and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Tomb of Askia stands as a symbol of the grandeur and power of the Songhai Empire, particularly during the reign of Emperor Askia Muhammad I (1443-1538)
