ZOE, SIAFA

  • 1 Min Read

Siafa Zoe (c. 1871-1940) was a herbalist and renowned native physician. Because of his healing powers, he became a leader of his people and head of the age group society of his tribes.

He was born in Lofa County, Liberia. He destroyed many of the superstitious beliefs of his people. Because of his influence with his people, he became the liaison between the Liberian government and his tribe during the early 20th century when the government began to extend its policy of indirect rule into the interior of Liberia.

He frequently traveled to Monrovia on this mission. He organised more tribal societies and was a powerful anti-witchcraft herbalist.

He died about 1940.

Editor’s Note

This website features a collection of articles largely from previously published volumes of the Encyclopaedia Africana, specifically the Encyclopaedia Africana Dictionary of African Biography, which highlights notable individuals from various regions of Africa. Please note that in these volumes, some names of people, towns, and countries were spelled differently than they are today. We have retained these historical spellings to preserve the integrity of the original publications. In some instances, the current spellings are also provided for easy reference.
