James Agea Himie Jones born on June 17, 1891 was educated at a Private School, Saint John’s Mission School, and Cuttington College and Divinity School.
He was a devout Churchman and a member of the Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Robertsport, where he held various positions including membership of the Council of Advice to the Bishop.
He served Grand Cape Mount County as City Clerk, Mayor of Robertsport; Clerk of the Territorial Court, and of the 5th Judicial Circuit Court, County Attorney, Judge of the Revenue Court, and Member of the House of Representatives from 1930 to 1943. He was President Pro Tempore of the Senate for twelve years, retiring from the Legislature in 1961, after 31 years of service having served as its Chairman. He later served on the Committees on Foreign Affairs, Judiciary, and Militia Affairs. For several years he was County Chairman of the True Whig Party.
In 1906, he enlisted in the Robertsport Militia and rose to the rank of Major, and Commanding Officer of the Cape Mount Detachment of the First Regiment. He became the Regiment’s first Colonel Commanding and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1944, and placed in charge of the First Brigade.
In 1955, he was commissioned Major General and was promoted Lieutenant General in 1964. He had previously served as Officer in command of the Militia Unit from Grand Cape Mount County and seen action in 1918.
He was twice married and was a member of many freemason lodges. In 1946 he was President Tubman’s Special Representative to the Independence of the Philippines, and in 1952, was the Government’s Representative at the Conference on Copyrights and the International Parliamentary Union.
President Tubman decorated him with the highest orders of the Republic as well as the Order of Military Service and merit for distinguished service to the state. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Liberia, and Cuttington College and Divinity School, which conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on him.
He died in Robertsport in 1966.
